Sydney Writers’ Festival Top Picks for Kids

With the Sydney Writers’ Festival rapidly approaching, it is extremely important to become familiar with the number of family and children’s events on offer. Some are paid and some are free but all are very important in showcasing the amazing children’s authors in Australia and internationally. Here are our top events for kids during the Sydney Writers’ Festival;

1. Jeff Kinney at the Sydney Opera House May 16th 2012
With the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series being a part of nearly every childs’ bookshelf, this is one event that will be sure to attract many budding cartoonists and writers.  From his early days as a cartoonist in college, to the origins of Greg Heffley, and much more, come and discover the story behind the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and hear about the life of one of the most popular children’s book authors of all time. 2. WriterOvernighter with Michael Pryor at the Powerhouse Museum Friday 18th May
We all love a sleepover, especially if it is at the Powerhouse Museum with one of the best Fantasy Authors Australia has to offer. Join the master of magic, Michael Pryor, for this steampunk-inspired event. Author of the bestselling series The Laws of Magic, Michael is currently writing books in a new series, The Extraordinaires. Michael will explain why history and places like the Museum are a fantasy writer’s best friend and lead you in a writing activity where you’ll imagine an alternate past powered by steam. 3. Storytime with Mem Fox Sydney Theatre at Walsh Bay 25th May
Join this wonderful storytime session with one of Australia’s most loved children’s authors Mem Fox. Mem will read from Where the Giant Sleeps, her magical new book filled with fairytale characters that children know and love. 4. Unicorn Tails with Aleesah Darlison 20th May
Aleesah Darlison writes picture books and novels for children and reviews books for The Sun Herald. Aleesah has always loved unicorns and as a child she collected unicorn figurines. She is best known for her amazing series the Unicorn Riders.
